During a popular event the Pennsylvania State Police called the Renaissance Faire's personnel who started directing traffic on Route 72 and controlling a stoplight at the event's entrance. The traffic soon backed up the Pennsylvania Turnpike by more than a mile.
The truck driver said she did not notice slowing traffic ahead. The westbound truck smashed into a car, which became wedged under the cab; both vehicles burst into flame. Inside the car were a 70 year old woman, a 39 year old woman, and 5 year old child. All were killed and burned so badly that dental records had to be used for identification. They were headed for the Renaissance Faire. The truck then hit five other vehicles; four more people were hurt. The truck driver escaped without injury.
